چکیده

The chapter is organized in ten sections, each of them presenting a fundamental issue or problem in the area of deontic logic. Section 10.2 is about the issue of norms and truth, i.e., whether norms should have truth value. It opposes deontic logic viewed as a logic of normative propositions to deontic logic viewed as a logic of imperatives. Section 10.3 deals with the problem of contrary-to-duty (CTD) reasoning while Sect. 10.4 is about the problem of normative conflicts, i.e., how a logic of norms can represent conflicting obligations both syntactically and semantically. Section 10.5 focuses on the issue of norm revision relating it to the problem of belief revision as studied in the classical approach of Alchourron, Gardenfors and Makinson (AGM). Sections 10.6 and 10.7 consider two fundamental problems in the logical representation of norms, namely the logical representation of the temporal aspects of norms and the logical representation of norms about

Introducing Exclusion Logic as a Deontic Logic

This paper introduces Exclusion Logic a simple modal logic without negation or disjunction. We show that this logic has an efficient decision procedure. We describe how Exclusion Logic can be used as a deontic logic. We compare this deontic logic with Standard Deontic Logic and with more syntactically restricted logics.

Aggregative Deontic Detachment for Normative Reasoning

Aggregative deontic detachment is a new form of deontic detachment that keeps track of previously detached obligations. We argue that it handles iteration of successive detachments in a more principled manner than the traditional systems do. To study this new form of deontic detachment, we introduce a ‘minimal’ logic for aggregative deontic detachment, and we discuss various properties of the l...

Mally's Deontic Logic: Reducibility and Semantics

We discuss three aspects of the intuitionistic reformulation of Mally’s deontic logic that was recently proposed (Journal of Philosophical Logic (2013) 42:635–641). First, this reformulation is more similar to Standard Deontic Logic than appears at first sight: like Standard Deontic Logic, it is Kanger reducible and Anderson reducible to alethic logic and it has a semantical interpretation that...

A logic for deontic dilemmas

The possibility of deontic dilemmas poses a significant problem for deontic logic. Here I review some proposals to resolve this problem, and then offer a new account. This is a simple modification of standard deontic logic that enables the system to accommodate deontic dilemmas without inconsistency and without deontic explosion, while at the same time accounting for the range of genuinely vali...

Andersonian Deontic Logic, Propositional Quantification, and Mally

We present a new axiomatization of the deontic fragment of Anderson’s relevant deontic logic, give an Andersonian reduction of a relevant version of Mally’s deontic logic previously discussed in this journal, study the effect of adding propositional quantification to Anderson’s system, and discuss the meaning of Anderson’s propositional constant in a wide range of Andersonian deontic systems.

Specifying and reasoning about normative systems in deontic logic programming

In this paper we propose the usage of a framework combining standard deontic logic (SDL) and non-monotonic logic programming – deontic logic programs (DLP) – to represent and reason about normative systems.
